Is it financial success, emotional stability, family security, good relationship? Could it be a combination of factors, that when totaled amount to quality of life? Won't we all like to have a quality life? And believe me, nothing but personal development will take you one step further towards your well being.Conventionally, Intelligent Quotient (IQ) measures how well we measure up intellectually or socially and the role of logical thinking to learn efficiently and memorize the material was of paramount importance. But Emotional Quotient (EQ) is the new buzz word, that is about the degree of control a person has over his emotions or simply the index of emotional intelligence that one has, which is rapidly gaining recognition worldwide. But what is emotion? It is from Latin word 'emover' translated as -to move,to excite, to agitate. Today the term emotion is used as an umbrella to express love, hate, attraction, aggression or any other of such powerful feeling. But when such emotion or feeling of ours gets intense and goes out of control, it can get us into frequent troubles. Emotions may also wrap our judgements, turn friends into enemies and make us miserable as we were sick. No matter how good and sharp one is in learning, memorizing, problem-solving, decision making etc. unless one has an optimum control over ones emotions (measured and indexed in terms of EQ) he/she will not be able to achieve best results just because his mind is overflowing with unwanted emotions that one's general intelligence is unable to handle. Emotions impacts our thoughts, decision-making process and personal success in life. Developing EQ is much the same as exercise and eating habits, the longer you practise the skill the easier it becomes, almost a habit. Below are categorized some of the important skills you can and should use to develop and maintain your EQ. Self Awareness, Self Management, Self Motivation, Empathy, Interpersonal Savvy
EQ is not the opposite of IQ, infact both compliment each other or rather I would say "IQ gets you hired, but, EQ gets you promoted" Assuredly, by practising some or all of these steps to develop EQ, you will soon be able to consciously analyse what triggers your moods. This will allow you to move beyond those self-defeating emotional response to grow as a person, and experience better home and working relationship. Prof. (Dr.) Hepesh Shepherd
